Director of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Professor Wojciech Kriegseisen, acting on behalf of the authorities of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences and Polish Academy of Sciences, asked professor Stanisław Sławomir Nicieja to accept the honour of becoming a member of the Scientific Council of the Polish Biographical Dictionary (PSB).

The Scientific Council of the PSB brings together eminent historians of science, art, literature, music and theatre; many of them supervise museums, archives and other scientific institutions. The Scientific Council evaluates the final results of the work of the creators of the dictionary: authors of entries and the editorial team.

Membership in the Scientific Council is a great honour and shows the prestige chosen scholars enjoy in the Polish scholarly milieux. Professor Stanisław Sławomir Nicieja is the first scholar from the Opole research milieux who has been appointed to the Scientic Council of the Polish Biographical Dictionary. It shows how highly his works are evaluated and how big prestige and authority he enjoys among Polish scholars. This is one of his greatest personal successes he has achieved in his 40 years of research work.

The Polish Biographical Dictionary (PSB) is one of the most important Polish encyclopaedias. It has been published since 1935. So far, 49 volumes have been issued, with about 30 thousand biographical entries on deceased Poles from the times of Mieszko I till the present. The dictionary is published by the joint bodies of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences. The biographical entry of a person who is presented in the PSB, is the foundation of the knowledge about his or her life and work, and it is expanded with sources giving full information on the achievements of that person, becoming the most reliable description of his or her achievements.
